Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra

Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra (XPO) was established in 1998. Mr. Cai Wanghuai, the former chairman of Xiamen Chinese People's Consultative Committee and the honorable Chairman of XPO, was the major founder of the Orchestra. The first Artistic Director was the prestigious Chinese conductor Professor Zheng Xiaoying. XPO is the first non-state-owned orchestra in China that receives permanent supports from Xiamen municipal government and social sponsorship. The XPO Council was established in December 2009. MR. Pan Shijian, the former vice-mayor of Xiamen and Vice-chairman of Xiamen CPPCC, was the Chairman of the Council. In April 2019, MR. Su Wenjin, the former Deputy Director of Xiamen NPC and the President of Jimei University served as the Chairman of the Council. The President Responsibility System under the Council was put into effect in March 2016. Fang Yi is the current President and legal representative of XPO and Fu Renchang, a famous Chinese conductor, is the Art Director. XPO has been supported by Xiamen Municipal Party Committee and the municipal government since the establishment, both in policy and in funding, as well as many enterprises like State Grid Xiamen Electric Power Supply Company.

XPO has been persisting in staging regular concerts known as "weekend symphonies". In the past nineteen seasons, in cooperation with more than 500 guest musicians, the Orchestra held more than 1,500 wonderful performances in over 80 cities both at home and abroad. The great efforts of XPO in spreading classical music and improving citizens’ music quality have been highly appreciated by Xiamen citizens. The orchestra has been honored as one of the “Advanced Social Organizations in China” as well as over 20 other awards by the governments of both Fujian province and Xiamen city. It was also honored as a bronzing “City Card” by Xiamen citizens.
